Evolving a cross-border ecosystem with renewable hydrogen

On 10–11 September 2025, Ajdovščina hosted the first European Clusters Meet Regions event in Slovenia, organised by the European Cluster Collaboration Platform and RRA ROD Ajdovščina. The conference brought together policymakers, business representatives, cluster organisations, and innovation leaders to discuss how clusters can drive the green and digital transition.

NAHV was featured in Panel 2: Green transition and hydrogen solutions in the North Adriatic, moderated by Jurij Giacomelli (META Circularity, NAHV C&D Manager). The panel explored the role of hydrogen technologies in supporting sustainable industrial development and cross-border cooperation between Slovenia, Italy (Friuli Venezia Giulia), and Croatia.

Panel participants included:

  • Aleksander Gerbec (CEO, ECUBES Ltd.) – on how the North Adriatic Hydrogen Ecosystem started as a bottom-up, industry-led initiative.

  • Brigita Habjan Štolfa (Director, Northern Primorska Chamber of Commerce and Industry) – on the innovation landscape of Northern Primorska and the needs of local clusters.

  • Janez Furlan (Head of Department for Economic and Development Affairs, Municipality of Ajdovščina) – on the municipality’s systemic support for innovation and its involvement in NAHV.

Panelists Brigita Habjan Štolfa, Janez Furlan, and Aleksander Gerbec

The discussion emphasised how the North Adriatic Hydrogen Valley is a key driver of Europe’s green and digital transition, contributing to climate-smart agri-food systems and strengthening regional collaboration. The panellists highlighted the importance of knowledge parks, regional development agencies, and cluster-based cooperation for ensuring strategic autonomy and long-term innovation capacity in the region.

More information about the event is available on the RRA ROD website and the European Cluster Collaboration Platform.
