Evolving a cross-border ecosystem with renewable hydrogen

The Hydrogen Ecosystem North Adriatic Conference has become one of the key convergence points for the actors driving the hydrogen transition in the NAHV. What began as an industry-led initiative is now evolving into a strategic investment and matchmaking platform — directly aligned with NAHV’s mission to connect technology developers, investors, policymakers and innovators across Slovenia, Croatia and Italy’s Friuli Venezia Giulia region.

Co-organised by ECUBES and META Circularity (both NAHV partners), the Conference serves as a permanent interface between the NAHV, NACHIP and other emerging hydrogen initiatives, ensuring that collaboration does not remain limited to individual projects but extends across the entire ecosystem.

Why it matters for NAHV

The Conference plays a structural role in reinforcing NAHV’s long-term governance and visibility:

  • It is embedded in the evolution of the NAHV itself. The proposal for the first transnational hydrogen valley was shaped through dialogue initiated at earlier editions of the Conference.

  • It continues to attract new initiatives and investments, supporting NAHV’s goal of enabling industrial testbeds, pilot deployments, education programmes and large-scale hydrogen infrastructure development.

  • With initiatives such as NACHIP (North Adriatic Clean Hydrogen Investment Platform) and NASCHA (North Adriatic Smart Communities Hydrogen Accelerator) now in place — and others already in development — the Conference is becoming the umbrella space where these projects meet, align and scale.

From conference to investment platform

Looking ahead, the organisers, together with NAHV stakeholders, are steering the Conference towards a Hydrogen Investment Platform, focused on:

  • Matchmaking between innovators and investors, enabling technology transfer and acceleration of pilot projects toward industrial scale.

  • An “Innovators Listing” and Investors Club, launching in 2025 to systematically highlight regional solution providers ready for deployment.

  • Promoting the “Hydrogen Route 753”, a coordinated vision for reliable and secure green energy supply across the North Adriatic.

Supporting the first movers

The North Adriatic region, home to 7.3 million citizens and a €181 billion GDP economy, is positioning itself as Europe’s first-mover hydrogen market. The Conference reinforces that position by providing:

  • A neutral platform for transnational dialogue, aligned with the Quadruple Helix approach engaging industry, academia, policymakers and citizens.

  • A space for consensus-building and bold decision-making, helping stakeholders overcome structural challenges such as technology maturation, investment mobilisation and cross-border coordination.

  • A gateway for talent, research institutions and international partners seeking to be part of a rapidly growing hydrogen hub recognised at EU and global level.

A call to engage

As the NAHV scales up implementation, with over 20 industrial pilots, hundreds of millions in projected investments and 5,000+ tonnes of renewable hydrogen expected by 2029, the Conference will continue to be the place where progress is aligned and amplified.

NAHV partners, innovators, financial actors and policymakers are invited to actively participate in the upcoming editions, bringing forward their results, proposals and strategic needs.
